Amy Zhang, Book Review, Falling into Place

Author: Amy Zhang

Series: None

Rating: 5 stars

Genre: Contemporary

Synopsis: On the day Liz Emerson tries to die, they had reviewed Newton’s laws of motion in physics class. Then, after school, she put them into practice by running her Mercedes off the road.

Why? Why did Liz Emerson decide that the world would be better off without her? Why did she give up? Vividly told by an unexpected and surprising narrator, this heartbreaking and nonlinear novel pieces together the short and devastating life of Meridian High’s most popular junior girl. Mass, acceleration, momentum, force—Liz didn’t understand it in physics, and even as her Mercedes hurtles toward the tree, she doesn’t understand it now. How do we impact one another? How do our actions reverberate? What does it mean to be a friend? To love someone? To be a daughter? Or a mother? Is life truly more than cause and effect?

Amy Zhang’s haunting and universal story will appeal to fans of Lauren Oliver, Gayle Forman, and Jay Asher

How I got this book: Won from Book Nerd Reviews

The Short Version:

Holy Crap this book was amazing.

Funny story, this is actually the first thing I was nominated to do (so very long ago). It was also the last tag-thing I had to do, but then Monday’s post got delayed, so there’s on more coming.

I was nominated by Always Opinionated Girl, and now I have to answer these questions:

1. Which fictional character are you most like?

As I said in yesterday’s post, Luna Lovegood.

2. Which fandoms are you in?

Hahahaha…so many…
Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Vampire Academy, Hunger Games, Divergent, Mara Dyer…

Basically, this is my computer background.

Fandom Background2

3. What is your favourite book cover?

I love most book covers SO MUCH! I have no idea how I’m supposed to choose.

4. Which 5 books would you take with you to a desert island?

*sobs* Only five!?
I’m going to change this question to ‘series’…
Harry Potter
Percy Jackson (including Heroes of Olympus)
Vampire Academy (including Bloodlines)
The Mara Dyer trilogy
Throne of Glass series

5. What is your favourite children’s picture book?

I don’t remember a lot, but I remember loving the Franklin books.

Franklin

And my favourite one I’ve read recently is Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and Grumpy Little King.

6. What do you like most and like least about book blogging?

Like Most- talking about books with people who understand books’ awesomeness.

Like least- The time consumingness (which is totally a word)

7. When was the last time you cried reading a book?

I cry very easily in books, but the most recent read that made me cry was Falling into Place, by Amy Zhang.

8. Which book are you most embarrassed to say you haven’t read?

I’m not embarrassed about not reading books…because it’s almost always a case of ‘haven’t read it…yet’.
Although some people act like I should be ashamed that I’ve read no John Green.

9. Why and when did you decide to start your blog?

I’d wanted to start for a few years, but I didn’t really get into it until earlier this year, shortly after #PTALive Sydney

10. What are three things about you that not many people know?

I find these questions hard, because I never know what to say…

a) I used to play muggle Quidditch, but quit because it was too social.

tumblr_ltq4vx7LEF1r2optzo2_250

b) I love pop music from the late 90s, early 00s.

c) I got twitter so that I could enter a book giveaway, which I didn’t win.

11. What one book would you recommend I read?

Only One!?!? Probably The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin. Or Pivot Point, by Kasie West.

Ok, now I’m supposed to nominate people to complete another 11 questions.

I think we’ve established that I’m lazy, and so instead of nominating specific people, I’m just going to say, if you want to do this, then go ahead.

And these are the questions:
1. How did you get into blogging?
2. Which types of books do you prefer (ebook, audiobooks, ‘real’ books, etc.)?
3. How do you sort your bookshelves (alphabetically, rainbow, genre, etc.)?
4. What’s your opinion on ebooks, kindles, etc. (love them, hate them, indifferent)?
5. Do you prefer buying books, or borrowing them from the library, friends, etc.?
6. Would you buy a book after you’ve read it?
7. Do you like owning complete series? Or are you happy to only own 1 or 2 books from a series (and borrow the rest)?
8. Do you ever DNF (Did Not Finish) books? If so, do you write DNF reviews?
9. Have you ever read the end/last page of a book early, just to see how it ends? Or have you ever looked the ending up on wikipedia (or a similar website)?
10. Have you ever been waiting for a book, only to accidentally read a massive spoiler online before you could get to read it?
11. What are some books that you would recommend to anyone/everyone?

If you’re lazy, like me, or if you’ve already done it, then just choose one or two of the above questions and answer it in the comments.

This Week’s Topic: Top Ten Books I Read In 2014

I’m going to start by saying this is a cruel topic…HOW am I supposed to pick 10?

1. Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, by Richelle Mead
The whole of both series. Seriously, WHY did I wait so long to read these? They are so amazing!!!

Throne of Glass2. Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas
Again, whole series. Just so awesome!

3. Sinner, by Maggie Stiefvater
An unexpected extra story featuring Cole and Isabelle from Shiver…IT WAS AWESOME!!

4. If I Stay, by Gayle Forman
Oh, this made me cry! It was a 4 hour long audio book that I started at midnight and finished at 4am. So worth it.

5. Dracula, by Bram Stoker
I’ve wanted to read this for YEARS! And it did NOT disappoint.

6. Four: A Divergent Collection, by Veronica Roth
After the less-than-fantastic book that was Allegiant, I am SO GLAD Veronica Roth wrote this. It made me remember why I loved Divergent and Insurgent so much.
Even if I did spend most of it going “this person’s dead, this person’s dead, that one is still alive, but crippled, oh look, another dead person…”TheOne

7. Pivot Point, by Kasie West
Both books. Seriously loved these.

8. The One, by Kiera Cass
Great ending for the series. Seriously, fantastic.

9. Mind Games, by Kiersten White
Loved it. Seriously. I’ve loved all of Kiersten White’s books.

DarkWorld10. The Dark World, by Cara Lynn Shultz
I loved Spellbound and Spellcaster, so naturally I bought this as soon as I could..
I loved it!!

And because there is NO WAY I am sticking with 10, here are some more…

11. Half Bad, by Sally Green
ASDFGHJHGF! Amazing.

12. The Immortal Rules, by Julie Kagawa
Another book I’d been meaning to read this for years. And again, I was not disappointed.

Blue Lily13. Blue Lily, Lily Blue, by Maggie Stiefvater
Yes, two Maggie Stiefvater books, but they were both JUST SO GOOD!!

14. Disruption, by Jessica Shirvington
I can’t believe it took me so long to getting around to reading this author. This book was amazing, as was its sequel.

15. Falling into Place, by Amy Zhang
There is one reason this is so far down the list is because I only finished it on Sunday.
Oh my goodness, I TOTALLY get why people love this book.

A Thousand Pieces of You, Amy Zhang, Claudia Gray, Cornelia Funke, Corruption, Disruption, Falling into Place, Gillian Rubenstein, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Inkheart, Inkspell, J.K. Rowling, Jessica Shirvington, Kylie Fornasier, Let the Storm Break, Masquerade, Shannon Messenger, Space Demons, Suzanne Collins

Continuing with the many tags I’ve been tagged to do, quite some time ago I was tagged by Fangirling Misses to do the bookshelf tag.

Here we go.

Is there a book you really want to read but haven’t because you know that it’ll make you cry?

IMG_3331Yes, Falling into Place, by Amy Zhang.

I haven’t yet, because I know I’m going to need time to get over it, but it’s sitting on my shelf.

Pick one book that helped introduce you to a new genre.

IMG_3332The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins introduced me to Dystopian.

Find a book that you want to re-read.

ALL OF THEM!!

But seriously, though. I reread as many books as I can anyway, so this question is kind-of irrelevant.

(I’m not going to give a picture here)

Is there a series you read but wish you hadn’t?

No…I don’t think I’ve ever regretted reading a book/series.

If your house was burning down and all your family and pets were safe, which book would you go back inside to save?

Can I say all of them?

I mean it… I love them all.

Is there a book on your shelf that brings back fond memories?

Harry Potter. Always.

IMG_3333

See what I did there?

Find a book that inspired you the most?

Hmm…I always find these questions hard, because I don’t often get inspired by books…

Do you have any autographed books?

When I first got tagged to do this, I had one.
Masquerade, by Kylie Fornasier.

IMG_3338IMG_3346

Now, I have more 🙂

Disruption/Corruption, by Jessica Shirvington

IMG_3347IMG_3339IMG_3348

Let the Storm Break, by Shannon Messenger

IMG_3340IMG_3343

A Thousand Pieces of You, by Claudia Gray

IMG_3341IMG_3342

Find the book you have owned the longest.

IMG_3334Harry Potter, although it isn’t technically mine, it is the oldest IMG_3336book on these shelves.

Otherwise, it’s probably Inkspell, which I got before I got the first book in that series, Inkheart. But I don’t actually know.

I figured they both deserved a picture.

Is there a book by an author that you never imagined you would read or enjoy?

Space Demons, by Gillian Rubenstein

IMG_3337It’s not that I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the author, I just did not expect to enjoy a book titled ‘Space Demons.

Now, I know better.

And to end this tag, I have to post a photo of my bookshelf!

[If no picture is present, please assume that I have simply forgotten to take/upload one. If you are desperate to see a picture of my bookshelf, one is bound to appear on my twitter or instagram sooner or later]

This Week’s Topic: Top Ten Books on my Summer TBR

Now, this is going to be a difficult one…because Summer lasts from December to February…SO. MANY. BOOKS.

We’ll see if I can narrow it down, shall we?

1. The Retribution of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin
It isn’t out in Australia yet, otherwise I would have read it by now.

2. The Revenge of Seven, by Pittacus Lore
I bought this in August. AUGUST PEOPLE!!!

3. Captive, by Aimee Carter
After reading Pawn, I have been desperate to read this.
I read Pawn, like, a year ago.

4. Spark, by Rachel Craw
I WON THIS IN A GIVEAWAY I’M SO HAPPY!!!
Now it just needs to get here…*waiting*

5. Anna Dressed in Blood, by Kendare Blake
So, technically I’ve already started reading this…but I’m not heaps far into it yet.

6. The Maze Runner, by James Dashner
YES! I STILL haven’t read it yet. This book is driving me nuts.

7. Falling into Place, by Amy Zhang
Another giveaway win…I don’t know why I want to read this one…it’s going to destroy me.

8. We Were Liars, by E. Lockhart
It has been on reserve at the library for quite some time now…
I WANT THIS BOOK!!!

9. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs
So…borrowed this from a friend in June.
I should probably read it so I can give it back.

10. The Ruby Circle, by Richelle Mead
The only reason this is on the bottom of the list is because it doesn’t come out until February. *beckons February to come faster*

SUCCESS! Narrowed down to 10.

So…what are you planning on reading this summer (or winter, depending on where you live)?
