Author: Alexandra Bracken

Series: The Darkest Minds

Rating: 5 stars

Genre: Dystopian

Synopsis (book 1): When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a government ′rehabilitation camp′. Ruby might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America′s children, but she and the others had emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now on the run, she is desperate to find East River, the only safe haven left for kids like her, and she joins a group of other runaways who have escaped their own camps. Liam, their brave leader, is falling for Ruby, but she can′t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all Liam. But there are also other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government.

Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice – and one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.

Book Review, Bright Before Sunrise, Tiffany Schmidt

Author: Tiffany Schmidt

Series: None

Rating: 5 stars

Genre: Contemporary

Synopsis: Jonah and Brighton are about to have the most awkwardly awful night of their lives.

For Jonah, every aspect of his new life reminds him of what he has had to give up. All he wants is to be left alone.

Brighton is popular, pretty, and always there to help anyone . . . but has no idea of what she wants for herself. Her seemingly perfect life is marred only by Jonah, the one person who won’t give her the time of day, but also makes her feel, well, something. So when they are repeatedly thrown together over the course of one night, anything can–and does–happen.

Told in alternating chapters, this poignant, beautiful novel’s energy and tension, amidst the humour and romance, builds to a new beginning of self-acceptance and hope.

How I got this book: Netgalley

Release Date: March 5, 2015

The Short Version:

I have no idea what to make of this book. It’s divided into parts, which is helpful because my mixed feelings can be allocated a part each. I was absolutely loving it, until part 4 happened. Then things went downhill.

Or, rather, things jumped of a cliff, landed at the bottom, and made a slow ascent back up, but never made it back to the top.

Yes, I think that’s probably the best way to describe it.

WARNING: THE LONG VERSION MAY CONTAIN MINOR SPOILERS

Book Review, Gayle Forman, I Was Here

Author: Gayle Forman

Series: Standalone

Rating: 3 stars

Genre: Contemporary

Synopsis: This characteristically powerful novel follows eighteen-year-old Cody Reynolds in the months following her best friend’s shocking suicide.

As Cody numbly searches for answers as to why Meg took her own life, she begins a journey of self-discovery which takes her to a terrifying precipice, and forces her to question not only her relationship with the Meg she thought she knew, but her own understanding of life, love, death and forgiveness.

A phenomenally moving story, I Was Here explores the sadly all-too-familiar issue of suicide and self-harm, addressing it in an authentic way with sensitivity and honesty.

How I got this book: Sent from publisher (Thank you Simon and Schuster)

Release Date: February 1, 2015

The Short Version:

It took a while to get started, but once it did I started to enjoy it.

It was fairly creepy and disturbing, which I was not expecting. But it was still good.

I dunno…I expected one thing out of this book but got another, and I just really don’t know how I feel about it.

WARNING: THE LONG VERSION WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS.
There was just no way to properly explain my mixed feelings about the book without mentioning specific events/reveals.
As usual, the conclusion is still spoiler-free.
