Has anyone seen all the hype surrounding a book and gone OH MY GOSH I NEED THIS BOOK, and then when you tell your friends about it and how much you need it they’re all “What’s it about?”
And you just…
Since this happens to me all the time, I thought I’d compile a list of books I desperately need, even though I have no idea what they’re about.
Illuminae, by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
As far as I can tell, everyone who’s read this book has absolutely loved it…and so I need it.
Even though I have no flippin’ clue what it’s about.
Like, none whatsoever.
I just need it.
Passenger, by Alexandra Bracken
All I know about this is that Alexandra Bracken wrote it….and that’s more than enough for me to need it.
And look at that cover *gazes adoringly*
Truthwitch, by Susan Dennard
Again, no clue what it’s about, but that cover and that title and everyone says it’s awesome and OH MY GOSH JUST GIVE IT TO ME!
The Wrath and the Dawn, by Renee Ahdieh
Like, what even is this book about?
I don’t even know. But I’ve heard great things.
A Darker Shade of Magic, by V.E. Schwab
I have heard many a good thing about this book…still have no idea what it’s supposed to be about, but check out that cover!
And that title…it beckons to me.
Now, just to clarify, I don’t actually want to know what these books are about…I love surprises.
But this does happen to me way too often, so I have to know: does this happen to anyone else? Or do you all look at the blurb before deciding how much you need it?
All. The. TIME. Several of which are on this list (Illuminae, looking at you). Although I do have some idea about ADSoM, since I follow the author on twitter.
I do find that I’m less likely to buy the books I want that I know nothing about, though.
If I know nothing about a book, I have two modes:
– Borrow it from the library as soon as I find it
– Buy it the second I see it because I need it even if I know nothing about it
Since I’m slightly more likely to find myself in a bookstore than a library, I usually end up buying books that I know nothing about.
On the upside, I usually end up loving them 🙂
LOL! I thought I was the only one!!!! Yup I’ve been known to do this
I am SO GLAD I’m not the only one who does this! Seriously, I was slightly worried.
YES, PICK ME, PICK ME. Although I do generally have an idea of what they’re about because of all the reviews I read 😉 But hype makes me want to read them a LOT more haha.
I usually avoid reviews because I’m worried about finding things out about the book…I love going in completely blind.
But, yeah, seeing the hype on twitter/various blogs/goodreads always makes me want to read books 🙂
I hae no idea what Illuminae is about either but I need it XD
I need Illuminae like air.
What is it about? NO CLUE!
But I need it.
All the damn time, amazon one click is deadly for me!
Ah, yes…
*awkwardly doesn’t know what amazon one click is but assumes it is some sort of instant-buy ebook thing*
You haven’t read A Darker Shade of Magic?! You need to rectify this immediately!! You will adore Lila, she is the best, I want to marry her, but I also don’t want to get in the ways of her ambitions to rule the world and sail the seas so I will admire from afar!
No! I haven’t! *WAILS*
I even saw it once in a bookstore…but I’d already bought, like, 5 other books that day, so I didn’t get it, and I’m yet to see it at my local dymocks.
*cries forever*
YES YES I FEEL THIS ON A SPIRITUAL LEVEL, TBH. I don’t like knowing what books are about! Unless it’s just a vague pitch. *nods* Like, just a sentence. So “oh that book is by So and So and it’s about a murder investigation”. Yup. That’s aaaall I wanna know. And if it’s by a favourite author then it’s just INSTA need no matter the topic. hehe. I have absolutely 0% of an idea what Truthwitch and Passenger are about either. *shrugs* I also have no idea what A Thousand Nights is about but yet I requested and ARC and now it’s blinking at me and I’m excited to read it. 😀 YAY FOR GOING IN BLIND!
I LOVE going in completely blind! It’s just so much fun to have absolutely no expectations 🙂
Oh, and favourite authors…I don’t even CARE what the book is about. Passenger is by Alexandra Bracken, therefore I will read it.
And YAY for requesting ARCs when you don’t know what they’re about!! I’m yet to actually do that, but maybe one day…
YUP!!! I do this too. I want ALL of these books and have NO CLUE what most of them are about. I have The Wrath and the Dawn, and no it’s a 1001 Nights retelling, but the others are all a mystery to me. I hope they all live up to the hype 😉
Yeah, I’m hoping they’re as good as everyone keeps saying…especially Illuminae.
Oh my goodness, I LOVE THIS. Yes, so much yes! I haven’t a CLUE what Truthwitch OR Illuminae are about, and I don’t want to read the synopses either, I am just going to run with the hype monster and have at it!
OH- Wrath and ADSOM are definitely worth the hype- especially Wrath, I LOVED it!
I’m so glad to hear you liked Wrath and ADSOM! I’ll definitely be getting around to reading them…one day…
Haha, hype monster is actually a very good way of describing it…I think I might use that 🙂
